Gautschen – ceremonial initiation rite of the printing industry
A meeting of tradition and community spirit, cleansing and joyful new beginnings.
The meaning behind the ceremonial act of Gautsching, a centuries-old ritual in which water plays a central role.
Since the 15th century, printers and typesetters have been welcoming their apprentices into their circle with the tradition of Gautsching at the end of their apprenticeship.
Originating from student fraternities, this solemn ritual has developed into a symbol of the cohesion and values of the student community. At Gautschen, new members are welcomed into this community and at the same time prepared for the serious side of life in a humorous way.
Water is a symbol of purification and is said to wash away all the sins and burdens of the past. This symbolic act marks the transition into a new phase of life, which is associated with new challenges, but also with camaraderie and a sense of community.
The coater, the master coater, the first and second packer and the sponge holder are all part of the coaching process. Family, friends and coworkers are also present as witnesses, who confirm their presence by signing the certificate. During the act, the Gautschmeister gives a speech to the disciple and the audience.
The Gautschen is not only a ritual act, but also a moment of coming together and joy. This special day is often accompanied by a celebration. This summer, our apprentice Kim Wohlgemuth has been working
successfully completed her apprenticeship as an EFZ polygrapher. Of course, the “Gautschete” could not be missed and Kim also enjoyed the water baptism.
